The Westside has plenty of musicians and not many rehearsal rooms. The big multi-room rehearsal complexes are mostly east of the 405, in West Adams, Hollywood and the Valley. That doesn't leave you without options, though. There are a few good rooms between the 405 and the ocean, and knowing them can save your band a lot of time in the car.

The rooms, one by one
Paradise Recording (our studio)
The Rock Room rents for rehearsal at $30 an hour with a 2-hour minimum. That covers the live room and the lounge, with nobody else booked in; the vocal room and the recording gear stay locked. The backline is already set up and included: a pre-tuned Mapex kit, a Fender Mustang LT50 guitar amp, a bass amp, a PA (Mackie Micro Series 1202, four mic inputs, with Shure SM57 vocal mics supplied) and a 1917 Chickering baby grand; bring your own guitars and pedals. There's no engineer on the clock and no recording. If you want to track the song you've just nailed, you can bring your own engineer for $40 an hour or book a session with ours. Open until 2 am daily. The suite is upstairs with no elevator, so pack light. Rehearsal details and full backline list.
Santa Monica Music Center
A music school with studios at its Santa Monica and Culver City locations. Rooms with an amp are $30 an hour, rooms with drums, piano or keyboard are $35, and a large room with a piano is $45. It works well for duos, songwriters and drummers practicing. Check the booking page for room sizes before bringing a full band.
Musician's Choice Studios
A rehearsal-only facility in Culver City, running since 1999. It has four hourly rooms plus monthly lockouts and is open from 10 am to midnight every day. Studio A, the 235-square-foot room, is $35 an hour on weekday daytimes and $42 on evenings and weekends, with cheaper solo rates. Cancellations need 24 hours' notice. It's the nearest traditional rehearsal complex to Santa Monica that we found.
PIRATE.COM
Self-service rehearsal rooms in West Adams and Silver Lake that you book online and let yourself into. Standard rooms start at $14.20 an hour off-peak and Pro rooms at $21.50. Bring your own cymbals. West Adams is a straight shot east on the 10 from Santa Monica.
LA Rehearsal
A full-service rehearsal studio on Santa Monica Boulevard in Hollywood, just off the 101. Rooms run $15 to $35 an hour with a one-hour minimum, backline is included at no extra charge, and it's open from noon to midnight daily.
The Recording Club
A members' club in Santa Monica built out of Tiny Room Studios, with a live room and stage among its four rooms. It isn't an hourly rehearsal room. Membership starts at $450 a month in studio credit, plus a $5,000 initiation fee.
The drive is the real cost
Santa Monica to North Hollywood at 6 pm on a weekday typically takes 45 to 60 minutes, and the drive home is about 30. Call it 80 minutes of driving per rehearsal. For a band rehearsing twice a week, that's about 2.7 hours a week, 11 hours a month and more than 130 hours a year.
Saving a few dollars an hour rarely makes up for that. Bands that rehearse close to where they live tend to rehearse more.
What to look for
- Load-in. Ask what the path from your car to the room looks like: stairs, an elevator, how far you'll carry gear.
- Volume. A purpose-built, isolated room is the difference between rehearsing and being asked to stop.
- Backline. Check what's included and what costs extra, such as cymbals, keyboards or a PA.
- Hours. Confirm the last bookable hour, not the office hours.
- A path to recording. If the room can also record, a great take doesn't have to wait for next time.
