"Best recording studio in LA" has no single answer, because LA's studios don't compete with each other so much as serve different jobs. At one end are self-service rooms you unlock with a code. At the other are rooms where your favorite records were made, which quote by inquiry. Most artists should shop in the middle, and the right choice usually comes down to three things: budget, whether you need an engineer, and how far you're willing to drive.

The studios, by tier
PIRATE.COM
Eighteen self-service recording rooms across two LA locations, Silver Lake and West Adams, open 24 hours. You book online and let yourself in. Rooms come with an interface, monitors, a keyboard and mics, and start at $18.20 an hour ($23.10 for Pro rooms). Pirate also runs 17 rehearsal rooms in LA, from $14.20 an hour off-peak. It doesn't provide on-site engineers, though you can bring your own, so it suits people who can run a session themselves.
UNION Recording Studio
Three rooms at 5458 Santa Monica Boulevard in East Hollywood, open 24 hours a day. Its BLK MAZE room starts at $29 an hour during the day and $13 an hour overnight, with a 3-hour minimum. Engineers are available to book.
MIX Recording Studio
Four rooms at 539 S Rampart Boulevard in Westlake, open 24/7, with Dolby Atmos mixing. Studio time starts at $49 an hour for a daytime block. The MIX PRO vocal room, a Sony C800G into a Neve 1073 and a Tube-Tech CL 1B, runs with an engineer on every session from $60 an hour.
ZOOM Recording Studio
Two rooms in the same building as MIX, with on-site parking and a room where smoking is allowed. Hourly rates start at $16 overnight.
Green Tea Studios
A 24-hour studio on Pico Boulevard in Santa Monica that posts its rates. Room A is $160 for two hours or $300 for four with an engineer, and Room B is $130 for two hours or $240 for four. Both can also be rented without an engineer.
4th Street Recording
A Santa Monica institution a block off the Promenade, with an API console, a drum room, a piano and nearly five decades of records. It doesn't post rates, so book by phone.
Paradise Recording (our studio)
A boutique studio at 1505 4th Street in Santa Monica. Every booking takes the whole place: a vocal room, a live room with a pre-tuned Ludwig kit and a 1917 Chickering baby grand, the control room and the lounge. Sessions include our engineer and run $160 for 2 hours, $300 for 4 and $850 for a 12-hour day. Rehearsal is $30 an hour, or bring your own engineer for $50 an hour. Open 9 am to 2 am daily. The legendary rooms
The Village (West LA, in a 1920s Masonic Temple), Sunset Sound and EastWest (both on Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood), Capitol Studios (in the Capitol Records Tower), Henson Recording Studios (on La Brea), Westlake (West Hollywood) and Paramount (which lists four locations) are where much of the music you know was made. They book by inquiry, usually through a manager, label or producer. If you have the budget and the project calls for the room, nothing else compares. If you don't, you'll get more finished music per dollar in a well-run independent studio.
How to choose
- Your budget per finished song. A vocal over a finished beat usually takes a 2–4 hour block. A band tracking live needs a 6–12 hour day. Multiply by the rates above and compare totals, not hourly rates.
- Whether you need an engineer. Self-service rooms are cheapest only if you can run the session yourself. Otherwise, compare engineer-included prices side by side.
- Where you live. Hollywood to Santa Monica can take an hour at rush hour. A studio 15 minutes away that you'll actually use beats a famous one you'll dread driving to.
- Hours. Pirate, UNION, MIX and ZOOM advertise 24/7 access, and Google lists Green Tea as open 24 hours. Paradise runs until 2 am.
- Files. Ask when you'll get your session files and in what format before you book.
