Analog gear is still fun, but it can make modern studio work harder than it needs to be. This review looks at Karno’s SEPIA system, a digitally controlled host for analog modules. TL;DR verdict

Karno SEPIA is one of the smartest attempts yet to make analog equipment fit into a modern workflow. It keeps real analog modules in the chain but handles routing and recall digitally. That means less photographing settings, fewer notes, and no frantic knob copying when a client asks for a mix revision.

But it does not completely replace the experience of working with analog gear. The sound is there. The feeling is not always there. For some engineers, that difference is the whole point.

What SEPIA actually does

SEPIA is a rack system that houses compatible analog modules. Instead of having controls directly on the front of each module, you control everything through SEPIA’s software over a network connection.

The hardware setup is fairly straightforward:

  1. Put the analog modules into the host.
  2. Connect the analog inputs and outputs.
  3. Connect the system to your network.
  4. Use the control software to build signal paths and adjust the modules.

You can place several processors in a chain, create separate paths, or route one module into another. You can also link left and right channels, which is a big improvement over manually matching two mono EQs.

Most importantly, you can save the entire setup as a snapshot. Change everything for another session, then load the previous snapshot and get the original settings back. No printed recall sheets. No blurry phone pictures. No guessing where that compressor knob was sitting.

This is the part that feels genuinely useful. Analog gear is brilliant until you need to change sessions, move equipment, or remember what you did three weeks ago. SEPIA removes a lot of that friction.

For a working studio, that matters. When a singer or band comes back with notes, you want to spend time improving the mix, not rebuilding a settings sheet. A studio such as Paradise can focus on a smooth session for the same reason: the less time wasted on logistics, the more time people have to make something good.

The bad stuff

The biggest problem is tactile control.

With physical gear, the knobs stay where you left them. You learn the position of a control through muscle memory. You reach for the same compressor, make a small move, and your hands already know where to go.

SEPIA’s software interface looks like analog equipment, but clicking a picture of a knob is not the same as turning one. A control on screen can also change its function depending on what is selected. Even hardware controllers only partly fix this problem because the same knob may control something different from one moment to the next.

That sounds like a small complaint, but it is not. Tactile feedback can change how you think creatively. Sometimes the physical act of adjusting a control leads you somewhere unexpected. Software is usually faster, but faster is not always more inspiring.

There is also the cost. Six modules might be enough for a small chain or to add a little analog color to a setup. But to build a serious, high-channel-count system, you would need a lot more hardware. At that point, the investment becomes difficult to justify unless analog processing is central to your business.

Who should buy it?

SEPIA makes sense for:

  • Professional mix engineers using several compatible analog modules
  • Studios that need reliable recall between clients and revisions
  • Producers who want analog processing without a wall of patch cables
  • Engineers who value speed and organization over traditional hands-on control
  • Facilities building a hybrid setup from the ground up

It is probably not the right choice for someone who owns one or two pieces of outboard gear and enjoys adjusting them manually. In that case, the extra system may create more expense than benefit.

Alternatives to consider

If you want the sound without the hardware cost, plugins remain the obvious alternative. They are easy to install, easy to automate, and usually offer instant recall. The tradeoff is that plugins do not give you the exact same analog path or physical experience.

A controller can add some hands-on control to a software setup. It helps, but it still cannot make every control permanently physical. Traditional analog gear remains the best option if tactile work is the main reason you use hardware in the first place.

For many musicians, the best answer is a simple hybrid workflow: use plugins for repeatable everyday jobs, then bring in analog hardware when its sound or physical interaction really adds something. And when the mix is finished, a relaxed room, clear pricing, and a real human listening closely can matter more than another rack unit.

Final thoughts

SEPIA does not make analog gear obsolete. It makes manual analog recall feel obsolete, which is a different thing.

The system solves real problems and does it without removing the analog signal path. That is impressive. Still, it also shows the limit of trying to make hardware behave like software. You can copy the sound and the workflow, but you cannot perfectly copy the physical feeling of turning a knob.

For the right studio, SEPIA could be a huge step forward. For my own setup, the cost and scale would not make sense yet. I would rather spend the money where it improves the music directly—and keep a human ear involved when the final mix needs it.
